SUSHIL EYE BANK

EYE BANK
There are an estimated 2.5 million corneally blind in India. Another 25000 are added annually, due to injuries, malnutrition, infections, chemical burns, congenital disorders, post operative disorders.
Dr. Sharad Patil Chairman Kalpataru Foundation decided with the noble thought of helping corneally blind people and established Sushil Eye Bank in year 1999. Sushil Eye Bank is a nonprofit community organization which is catering to the needs of coneally blind people in nashik and surrounding region. Even though demand for donor eyes is much more than supply new avenues to get eyes are being tried like visiting various hospitals trauma and intensive care units arranging talks with staff and doctors of such hospitals, getting pledge for eye donation from Lions club, Rotary club centered public and dignitaries of Nashik like Mayor and well known social personalities. Municipal co-operation has allowed us communicate with relatives of dead people at morgue to convince them for donation. Apart from this regularly we distribute pamphlet, display banner at prominent locations, exhibit slides on eye donation at theatre halls, arrange talk shown on local akashwani network with social groups and conduct door to door campaigns, approach local press and cable for coverage of the events. The result of these activities has achieved considerable progress. We also encourage the individual and organizations of the state to start eye banks and serve the society. We give them the necessary guidance and help them to complete the official formalities. The trust is very active, the eye donation certificate is not sent to the donors family by post of through on assistant but one of the trustees personality visits the braved family and hands over the certificate to the next of kin. He also takes this opportunity to tell the gathered members of the family about the importance of eye donation. This has improved the rate of eye donations in Nashik.
